ABOUT AFROLEARN

African language learning built around useful, reviewed phrases.

AfroLearn is designed to make daily practice accessible, culturally grounded, and transparent about its content and data.

OUR APPROACH

Trust comes before scale

Reviewed curriculum

Scored lessons use phrases that have passed the project’s content-review rules. Draft material is kept out of adaptive scoring.

Learning that adapts

Mistakes, mastery, and spaced-review timing shape future practice instead of forcing every learner through the same sequence.

Desktop first

The current migration focuses on a fast, keyboard-friendly browser experience for computers. Streamlit remains available while features move across.

PRIVACY

Your browser holds your profile

Learning history is stored locally

The Next.js desktop app saves profile names, XP, streaks, completed activities, mastery, mistakes, and review schedules in this browser’s local storage. Clearing browser data removes it, so download a profile backup before moving computers or clearing site data.

Lesson generation sends the selected language and adaptive learning signals to the configured AfroLearn FastAPI service. In local development that service runs on your computer. A hosted deployment should publish its own retention and infrastructure policy.

SOURCES & ATTRIBUTION

Built with open language resources

African Storybook

Open storybooks retain their author, illustrator, translator, and license metadata in the reader.

WAXAL & Common Voice

Open African speech resources and Mozilla Common Voice support pronunciation work, with source-specific license terms retained.

Tatoeba & parallel text

Community-contributed sentence pairs expand practice coverage. Machine-generated or unreviewed material is labeled and excluded from trusted scoring.
